Fri 1

ARRIVE IN QUEENSTOWN

(D) On arrival at Queenstown Airport make your own way into the township by taxi or shuttle van; and check into the hotel.
6.00 pm Meet in the hotel bar for a mix and mingle with other delegates
(drinks at individual cost).
7.30 pm
Dinner in the hotel restaurant is included.

IN QUEENSTOWN

(BD)

Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning sightseeing tour of Queenstown including a visit to the old goldmining town of Arrowtown and the Skyline Gondola to Bob’s Peak from where there are panoramic  views across Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu to the surrounding mountains.

Free afternoon.

6.00 pm Depart Queenstown and cross Lake Wakatipu aboard the 1912 vintage steamship the TSS Earnslaw for dinner at Walter Peak High Country Sheep and Cattle Station.
10.00 pm Arrive back and walk around the lakefront about 400 metres to the hotel.

MILFORD SOUND DAY TRIP

(BL) Breakfast at the hotel.
7.15 am

Depart Queenstown by coach and travel around Lake Wakatipu and across the picturesque Southland countryside to Te Anau and into Fiordland National Park. The scenery is stunning with high mountains and deep valleys carved out by Ice Age Glaciers. On arrival at Milford Sound take a scenic cruise down the fiord past the Stirling and Bowen Falls to the open sea. Wonderful views of Mitre Peak which rises sheer 5260 ft asl from the still dark waters of the fiord. Seals and dolphins are often seen.

Buffet lunch is served aboard.

In the afternoon return by coach to Queenstown. (Note there is the option – weather permitting of returning instead on a 40 minute scenic flight at extra cost).Free evening – dinner your own cost.

QUEENSTOWN / TIMARU / GERALDINE *

Breakfast at the hotel.

This morning drive north through the Kawarau Gorge to the Cromwell fruit growing district passing a number of excellent wineries along the way. Sheep farming predominates as we cross the Lindis Pass to the MacKenzie Basin and descend through the Waitaki Valley to Waimate and Oamaru.

Lunch today on a lifestyle farm near Timaru where there are some Guernseys in the herd and later in the afternoon drive on to Geraldine *.

Stay tonight on local farms (usually 3 - 4 people per farm). An opportunity to meet Kiwi farmers in their own homes and enjoy socialising and dinner with them.

Tue 5

GERALDINE / CHRISTCHURCH /KAIKOURA

(BD) Breakfast on the farms.
10.00 am

Re group and drive on north across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch. The city was devastated by a huge earthquake in February 2011 and is rebuilding. After a short sightseeing tour of Christchurch continue to the seaside township of Kaikoura.

Dinner at the hotel is included.

KAIKOURA / BLENHEIM

Morning 3 hour Whale watch Cruise. The sea off Kaikoura is rich in nutrients which attract a wide variety of sea and bird life.  Not only can whales be seen most days year round but so can pods of dolphins.

In the afternoon drive north to Blenheim for a stop at the Omaka Vintage Aviation Museum - an amazing collection of old airplanes many of them owned by film maker Sir Peter Jackson.

Dinner at Wither Hills Winery.

BLENHEIM / PICTON / WELLINGTON

Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning free in Blenheim.
Then drive to Picton and take an early afternoon cruise through the picturesque Marlborough Sounds and across Cook Strait to Wellington on the North Island. (Interislander ferry- 2.30pm /5.40 pm)

IN WELLINGTON

Morning sightseeing tour of Wellington City includes a visit to Weta Workshop.

Sat 9

WELLINGTON / MARTINBOROUGH / PALMERSTON NORTH

Breakfast at the hotel.

This morning drive north through the Hutt Valley and across the Rimutaka Ranges to  the Wairarapa Region This is an important sheep and cattle farming area and in recent years has become very well known for the excellent wines produced here – particularly its Pinot Noirs. A relaxing winery lunch is included before driving on through the Manawatu Gorge to Palmerston North City.

Dinner is not included this evening.

PALMERSTON NORTH / HUNTERVILLE /ROTORUA

Breakfast at the hotel.

This morning drive north across the Manawatu Plains to Hunterville to see a Guernsey herd. After lunch on the farm drive on north through Taihape and Waiouru and across the Desert Road to Taupo on the shores of New Zealand’s largest lake. From here it is a further hour north through Wairakei where there is a large geothermal power station and through farmlands and forests to Rotorua.

Free evening – dinner not included.

AT ROTORUA

(BD)

Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning sightseeing includes a guided tour of Te Puia – the Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve to see the geysers, mud pools and other weird thermal activity plus the Maori Village and Cultural Centre. Also visit the popular Agrodome to see how one enterprising farmer has built a thriving business showing off his sheep; plus the picturesque Rainbow Springs to see the large trout and rare nocturnal Kiwi bird.

Free afternoon.

Evening

Hangi dinner and concert of Maori song and dance on Tamaki Tours Marae.

Returned to your Hotel.

ROTORUA / WAIKATO FARM VISITS / CAMBRIDGE

Breakfast at the hotel.

This morning cross the bush clad Mamaku Ranges to the Waikato Valley for a visit to 2 farms where Guernseys are milked – one at Springdale, another at Morrinsville.  Farm lunch is included.

In the afternoon drive on to Cambridge to meet your hosts for the overnight on a farm. (usually 4 – 6 people to each farm). Dinner is included.

CAMBRIDGE / HAMILTON

Breakfast on the farms.

Then regroup and visit a modern 183 hectare demonstration dairy farm at St Peter’s private School near Cambridge. This is a joint venture between the school and Lincoln University to train and educate young farmers to farm more productively and profitably with environmental integrity.

Lunch your own cost in Cambridge and in the afternoon drive through the lush  Waikato countryside to Jim and Nancy Lichtwark’s Oakhill Guernseys to view their herd and for an early evening barbeque dinner before continuing to Hamilton and checking into the Conference hotel.

A guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set where many of the scenes for the award winning Lord of the Rings film trilogy were filmed with a Banquet dinner at the Green Dragon Inn – a fun and memorable way to conclude your visit to New Zealand.
